House Speaker Gets Corvette For His Service

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Now that he has a 1977 corvette, House speaker Allan Bense can hang a pair of oversized, fuzzy dice on the car. House legislators gave the Panama City Republican the car, the dice and a customized license plate to go with it all.

Members all pitched in to buy Bense, who's served as Speaker for the past two years, the bright blue, customized car. House staff confirm it cost under 10-thousand dollars.

When a photo of the car flashed on a giant screen that hangs on the chamber's middle wall, Bense responded, "I've always wanted a Corvette."

The gift came after a painting of Bense was unveiled and hung in the chamber, a House tradition. Portraits of Florida's past 47 speakers hang in the chamber, dating back to 1893. Panama City artist Jann Daughdrill painted Bense's portrait.
